About Us
The Forge is situated near Guildford in the heart of the Surrey hills. The business is run by Nick Bates and Richard Hillam, as a traditional forge but with a strong artistic attitude towards metalwork. There 's no better place to witness traditional metalworking skills, along with a craftsman's approach to creating fascinating sculptural ironwork. They will work in any number of metals, but have a special interest in hot forged iron & steel.
Burrows Lea Forge has always considered that quality is the highest priority and when a commission is undertaken, the client should be confident that no matter the article they could be guaranteed of uncompromising service and craftsmanship. When Nick Bates started the forge in 1992 it was this promise of excellence he offered, and 11 years on the promise is the same.
At The Forge, metal and ironwork commissions are wholly designed and made by Nick, Richard and their blacksmiths. They take pride in the fact that all the designs are original and true, and have high regard to the medium they work in, after all it is better for the man who works the metal to design for it. They know the limits and merits of forged metal better than anyone.
Because they design and make their work, they are not hindered or stifled by a style or tradition, although if requested they can tackle any project in a fixed style whether it be Baroque, Rocco, Medieval or Victorian gothic, Art Nouveau or Deco. If a particular historic piece needs making, they will undertake research if need be, to find the correct form and technique. This flexibility arises from being formally trained and qualified, as well as having a genuine love of good metalwork whether it is a door handle or prestigious entrance gates.
The Forge and their blacksmiths have an enviable list of clientele, and have individually and together worked on many varied commissions and projects. This wealth of experience is on hand when needed, and is utilised frequently when designing, and forging quality ironwork.
By our customer's patronage, Burrows Lea Forge has grown from small beginnings to a mature blacksmithing business, which in this day and age is a rare example of people's passion for quality and artisan's who wish to practise it!
